Description
SCARRON, Paul - Le Virgile travesty en vers burlesques. Paris, Tovssainct Quinet, Guillaume de Luynes (vol. VII), 1648 (vols. I and II), 1649 (vols. III and IV), 1650 (vol. V), 1651 (vol. VI), 1653 (vol. VII). 7 parts in-4, volume I: (13) ff. including 2 plates, 122 pp, (1) f. (privilege); volume II: (4) ff. including 1 plate, 128 pp; volume III: (6) ff. including 2 plates, 101 (1) pp; volume IV: (6) ff. including 2 plates, 129 pp; vol. V: (6) ff. of which 2 pl. 132 pp; vol. VI: (4) ff. of which 2 pl. 129 pp; vol. VII: (6) ff. of which 2 pl. 106 pp, (1) f. (privilege). The frontispiece repeated six times and five plates out of six, (that of volume II is missing) are by François Chauveau; these sometimes trimmed short with slight damage to margins, qqs. light spotting, sign. Guyot on titles, frontispiece of vol. VII detached, contemporary limp vellum, several light spots on boards. TCH V, 712. DE BACKER 729. MAGNE n°19, 22, 25, 27, 29, 31 and 33. First edition of the first seven books, the only ones published during Scarron's lifetime. The preliminary leaves of volume I contain verses by Georges de Scudéry, Tristan L'Hermite, Boisrobert, Dupin, La Mothe Le Vayer fils, Segrais, Sarasin, Urbain Scarron. This copy contains twelve handwritten corrections in the seventh part, all but one of which were used in subsequent editions. It seems that Guillaume de Luynes did not make any other editions with integrated corrections, preferring to make a number (?) of them by hand, as in the case of the copy in the Sainte-Geneviève library (4 Y 275 INV 356 RES). However, in the Sainte-Geneviève copy, a verse considered to be misplaced has been established in another place in the margin, a correction not indicated in our copy. De l'Infante Lavinia // Le Roy dit l'âme perturbée, becomes: Se prendre à la teste frisée // De l'Infante Lavinia (p. 16 verses 350-351). Another variant appears in the first lines of page 23 (verse 512): ''Là-dessus aux Nymphes du lieu // On donna le dernier adieu'' has been corrected in our copy: ''Là-dessus aux Nymphes du lieu // On donna le dernier adieu'' becomes: ''Là-dessus aux Nymphes du lieu // On donna le dernier adieu''. Là-dessus aux Nymphes du lieu // On donna le denier à Dieu. This variant has not been retained. Ex-libris of Ph.-L. de Bordes de Fortage and Docteur Lucien Graux.
