Description
STACE - Stace's Achileyde. Delightful poem completed in five Books, for the first part, containing the whole History of the youth of Achilles. Translation into verse, with the beginning of the Thebaïde (...) by M. D. M. A. D. V (Following:) Tibulle and Propertius. Paris, Jacques Langlois, 1678. In-4, 140, 111, 254 pp, some pages yellowed or with browning, contemporary granulated brown calf, triple gilt thread on covers, coat of arms in centre, crowned numeral in corners, spine ribbed and decorated with crowned numeral on entrenerfs, headpieces and hinges remaindered.
TOINET (Poèmes héroïques) 260 Original editions of these verse translations by Michel de Marolles. He had already published prose translations in 1658, 1653, 1654. With the Achilléide, Marolles wanted to try his hand at the genre of the epic poem, a noble one par excellence. The myth was revived at the Opéra in 1687 in a tragedy by Campistron with music by Lulli. With the coat of arms and cypher of Julie d'Angennes, duchess of Montausier (1607-1671), for whom the famous "Guirlande de Julie" was composed (OHR pl. 451). Two years later he dedicated his translation of Athénée to the Duc de Montausier.
