Description
TRISTAN L'HERMITE, François - La Mort de Chrispe, ou les malheurs domestiques du grand Constantin. Paris, Cardin Besongne, 1645. In-4, front. (5) ff., 120 pp. front. signed Stella engraved by Daret, some light spotting, front slightly faded, contemporary soft vellum. TCH V 922. First edition. The play was performed in the spring of 1645 at the Jeu de Paume de la Croix-Noire by Molière's troupe. This tragedy anticipates Racine's Phèdre (1677). The empress Faustus, Constantine's second wife, fell in love with the handsome Crispus, whom the emperor had had with his first wife, Minervina; but the young man repulsed her with horror, and told her "that if she persisted in this infamous will, he would warn the emperor"; Driven by anger and fear, Faustus complained to Constantine that Crispe had tried to do her violence, and the emperor, furiously resenting the outrage, had his son poisoned during a banquet (V. M. Bernardin, p. 451).
