Description
VIRGILE - L'Enéide de Virgile fidèlement traduite en vers & les Remarques à chaque livre pour l'intelligence de l'Histoire et de la Fable... par Messire P. Perrin. Paris, Etienne Loyson, 1658 (P. Moreau, 1648 for volume I). 2 volumes in one vol. in-4, engraved title, (9) ff, 465 pp, (1) f. (privilege); engraved title, (7) ff, 463 pp, several ff. browned, russet, contemporary brown bas, gilt thread on boards, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt thread, headpieces and corners remain. LACHÈVRE II, 412. First edition of this translation dedicated to Cardinal de Mazarin (vol. I) and Cardinal Barberini (vol. II). Perrin (Lyon c. 1620 - Paris 1675), King's adviser and introducer of ambassadors to the Duke of Orléans, is considered to be the creator of opera in France. Two titles and 12 mid-page figures by Abraham Bosse. The two engraved titles feature the arms of Cardinals Mazarin and Barberini and emblems inscribed in medallions illustrating the virtues of the two men. The main work of calligrapher and master of handwriting Pierre Moreau, who was awarded the title of "imprimeur ordinaire du Roi" in 1643 for the creation of new typefaces in the style of handwriting. Volume I, which is being reissued with a relay title at the date of 1658, is printed entirely with these typefaces (grosse et petite bâtarde in 4 different sizes, typographical ornaments imitating pen springs). It seems that only eleven books were published in Moreau's typeface between 1643 and 1648.
