Description
AUDIGUIER, Vital d' - Histoire des Amours de Lysandre & de Caliste. Amsterdam, Henry and Theodore Boom, 1679. Pet. in-12, 408 pp (title-front. compr.), 16 figs, slightly post-published havana calf, spine ribbed and decorated. WILLEMS 1309. LEVER 216. DRUJON I, 474. First published in Paris in 1616. Vital d'Audiguier (1529?-1624), lord of la Menor in the Rouergue region, belonged to the small court of Marguerite de Valois where most of the renowned literary figures gathered. He combined an adventurous life with a gift for imagination: ''ma plume sent la qualité // D'un homme qui porte au côté // Le taillant dont elle est coupée''. The story takes place during the reign of Henri IV. Audiguier bears witness to the Christian fervour that lifted souls. Several characters in the novel enter religion: Lidian becomes a hermit on Mont-Serrat, Clairange becomes a Capuchin. Lysandre himself, before happily uniting with Caliste, tried out the anchorite life on Mont Valérien.
