SAUVY (Livres saisis) no. 197; These three novels seem to be by François Chavigny de la Bretonnière (1652 - c. 1705), a licentious and anticlerical author of gallant intrigues set in cloisters, the most famous of which is La Vénus dans le cloître (Cologne, 1683). In L'Adamite, he recounts how a Jesuit managed to pervert the nuns and boarders of a convent in Reims to which he had access, arguing that modesty and shame did not exist in the original state of innocence. The frontispieces are probably by Jacques Harrewyn (1600-1727).
