Description
DU VERDIER, Gilbert Saulnier - La Sibile de Perse. Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1632. In-8, (1) f., 515 pp., (1) f., 20 ff. not numbered between pp. 414 and 415, paper a little yellowed, lacking the 7 introductory ff., green half-marble with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt head (PETIT successor of SIMIER). ARBOUR 14554. LEVER 391. First edition. An adventure novel partly inspired by Amadis and romances of chivalry. It sometimes makes use of the marvellous: ''In the Sibile de Perse by du Verdier, the Sibile leads a character from the island of Axent (?) to the Sainte-Baume, by a path which passes under the seas and continents. On this journey, the two travellers see the single source from which all rivers flow'' (Magendie, p. 38). - The shield of Spheramond of Greece had the virtue of making invisible anyone who wore it upside down''. (op. cit., 176). Stamped Gustave Mouravit.
