Description
DU VERDIER, Gilbert Saulnier, sieur - Les Esclaves ou l'Histoire de Perse. Paris, Thomas Le Roy, 1628. In-8, (4) ff, 634 pp, paper a little yellowed, some angular spotting, supple contemporary vellum, traces of binding.
LEVER 154. First edition dedicated to Henri de Lorraine, comte d'Harcourt. Little is known of Du Verdier. He was historiographer of France, his numerous works led him just to the hospital: around the year 1676 he obtained for himself and his wife an asylum at the Salpêtrière and he died there in 1686. This champion of chivalry is best known for the Chevalier Hypocondriaque, 1632, inspired by Don Quixote. He was the last representative of a genre soon to fall into disuse, but his work has the advantage of listing all the clichés of the novel of chivalry (Lever, p. 40).
