GARON, Louis - Le Chasse ennuy, ou L'honneste entretien des bonnes compagnies. Rouen, Jacques Cailloué, 1652. Pet. in-12, (6) ff, 588 pp, contemporary vellum, spine covered with 18th c. fawn calf, ornamented.

The author has divided these accounts into five centuries: popes and ecclesiastics (1), dukes, princes, soldiers (2), lawyers, doctors, philosophers (3), husbands and wives, villagers (4), a mixture of pleasant merriment (5). His aim was as much to edify his audience as to entertain them. His anecdotes are characterised by extraordinary or bizarre remarks that arouse astonishment or admiration. Aimed at a popular audience, the work, like the Tombeau de la Mélancolie and the Facétieux Réveil-Matin, was widely distributed (at least six editions of Part 1 between 1600 and 1662, including a translation).
