Description
LA CALPRENEDE, Gautier de Coste, sieur de] - Le Tolédan. Second Edition. Printed in Rouen and sold in Paris, Guillaume de Luyne, 1649 (2nd and 3rd part)- 1653 (4th part)-1654-1655. 5 vol. in-12, 18th c. marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated.
LOSADA GOYA n°451. LEVER 404. Parts 3, 4 and 5 are first editions. Imitated for volume I of Los Cigarrales de Toledo by Tirso de Molina, but probably entirely original for the rest. ''The Toledo is first and foremost the story of the fictionalised life of Don Juan of Austria, accompanied, as in many Baroque novels, by secondary and interwoven stories featuring characters, plots and situations linked to the major political, military and sentimental events surrounding Charles V and Philip II; the literary discourse is also entirely novelistic, and sometimes typical of the central vein in Baroque aesthetics. [...] It is therefore a Spanish historical novel, written directly in French, with scattered and diverse backgrounds'' (G. Molinié, in Toledo 1085 - 1985, р. 179-180).
