LEVER 58. Collection first published in 1606 of short stories published between 1598 and 1602. Antoine de Nerveze, born around 1576, died around 1615, was secretary of the Chamber of King Henri IV. He was associated with Philippe Desportes and Jean Bertaut. In 1605, he published a collection of poems, Essais poétiques, dedicated to Henri de Bourbon: vers amoureux, followed in 1606 by religious verses: Poèmes spirituels, dedicated to the Queen. Along with Du Souhait, Nervèze contributed to the education of the nobility with his Guide des Courtisans (1606), written perhaps at the suggestion of Henri IV: in it, he combats in particular the mania for duelling that was beginning to be rife. Above all, Nervèze was the most fertile novelist of his time and the most famous before l'Astrée. Mainard speaks of a time when Nervèze was considered the 'king of orators'" (Sage, p. 51). Magendie (Politesse, p. 280) reports that he and Des Escuteaux "were the sweethearts of the ladies" and that "if any differences arose between them regarding a term, they would refer to Nervèze". His style remained proverbial until the end of the century for its bizarre metaphors and unintentional comedy (Lever, p. 52), but it has been shown that he and Rosset were able to give a particular twist to sentimental and tragic stories that had not previously existed in the language (see W. Krömer, Die Renaissance-Novella in Frankreich, E 20-49). Ex-libris Nathan Schuster, Justin Godart.
