GAY III, 406. LEVER 324 (1657). First published in 1657. The Nouvelles Françaises are a milestone in the birth of the classical novel. Princess Aurélie (in whom Mlle de Montpensier was recognised) gathered six of her lady friends, who were great readers of novels and liked to discuss them among themselves, at her château des Six-Tours. Each of the six ladies, in turn, will recount a true adventure over six consecutive days. These short stories take us to a wide variety of places and times: From medieval Provence (Adelayde, comtesse de Roussillon, ou l'amour constant), to the Ottoman Empire in 1638 (Floridon, ou l'amour imprudent), from Normandy under the reign of William the Conqueror (Mathilde, ou l'heureuse reconnaissance) to the war between the Armagnacs and the Burgundians (Aronde, ou les amants déguisés) and to contemporary Paris (Eugénie, ou la force du destin; Honorine, ou la coquette punie). While the characters still belong to the tradition of the precious novel, they foreshadow the modern novel through the accuracy of their psychological observations and the truth of their feelings (V. LEVER, Le Roman français au XVIIe s., pp. 177-179).
