Description
ZACHARIE DE LISIEUX] - The Gyges Gallus by P. Firmian. Translated by P. Antoine de Paris, Capuchin preacher. Paris, Denis Thierry, 1663. In-12, frontispiece, (11) ff. of which the last is blank, 441 pp. in contemporary ivory vellum.
LEVER 178. First Latin edition in 1658; first edition in French. The Gigès Gallus enabled him to make himself invivable; Zacharie de Lisieux imagines that it belonged to Father Zacharie's satirical period. Gygès had received a ring that was like a present, allowing him to cross walls and become a painter of manners in a piquant and unexpected way: the author's verve is used in turn against fianciers, moneyed marriages, hypocrisy and everything that could be criticised at the time. (Julien-Eymard, D.L.F., 1027).
