Paris, Antoine de Sommaville, 1657. In-4, (2) ff, 514 pp, (3) ff. including errata, paper a little yellowed, russ, supple contemporary vellum, coat of arms in centre.
SOLEINNE V, 1st part, n°382. First edition. The work ends with L'Examen de l'Ajax de Sophocle, Le Jugement de la tragédie intitulée Penthée écrit sur le champ et envoyé au cardinal de Richelieu, et un Projet pour le rétablissement du Théâtre-Français. We note in this last play a singular fact that has not been reported elsewhere: the author says that young debauchees were constantly disturbing the performances, spreading fear everywhere and often committing murder'' (Soleinne). With the arms of Neufville de Villeroy born in Versailles in 1695, governor of Lyonnais, Forez and Beaujolais, captain of the hunting grounds of Corbeil and Sénart (OHR 178). Could be the ex. of Soleinne described as bound in parchment with arms. His library was sold in 1845.
