Description
BALZAC, Guez de - Aristippe, ou de la Cour. Paris, Augustin Courbé, 1658. In-4, engraved front by Huret, (3) ff. 244 pp, (10) ff, some foxing, paper a little yellowed, ivory vellum.
TCH. I, 374. First edition. Posthumous work dedicated to Christine of Sweden, as his efforts to have it accepted by Richelieu and Mazarin were in vain. He placed it above all his other writings: ''Aristippus is my beloved; he is the delight of my eyes and the consolation of my old age. I have done it over and over again a hundred and twelve times; I have used all my knowledge, all my wit and all that of others in it''. This apology for Louis XIII and Richelieu contains a gallery of portraits of ministers that are strikingly true and topical. Balzac warned the sovereign against over-indulgent courtiers "who insinuate themselves into his mind, through the intelligence they try to have, with his passions.
