He placed it above all his other writings: ''Aristippus is my beloved; he is the delight of my eyes and the consolation of my old age. I have done it over and over again a hundred and twelve times; I have used all my knowledge, all my wit and all that of others in it''. This apology for Louis XIII and Richelieu contains a gallery of portraits of ministers that are strikingly true and topical.
