Description
CALLIERES, François de - Histoire poétique de la guerre nouvellement déclarée entre les Anciens et les Modernes. Amsterdam, Sur la Copie imprimée à Paris, (1688). Pet. in-12, (12) ff, 263 pp, folding plates representing the different literary currents in order of battle, 18th c. fawn calf, gilt chain on covers, smooth spine decorated.
Like Furetière's Nouvelle allégorique and Guéret's Parnasse réformé, Histoire poétique is one of those literary satires in dramatic form for which Lucien provided models. The author recounts that at the Academy assembly in the Louvre, Perrault had just read Le Siècle de Louis le Grand, which divided the Academy into two opposing camps. Immediately fame spread alarm throughout Parnassus, and the most illustrious of the ancients and moderns who inhabit the sacred mountain were divided like the Academy.
