Description
CÉBÈS, de Thèbes - Le Tableau de Cébès où il est traité de la manière de parvenir à la félicité naturelle. Paris, Louis Chamhoudry, 1653. In-8, (8) ff, 88 pp, folding plate (table showing the passions), contemporary soft vellum. LACHÈVRE II, 158. First edition of Gilles Boileau's (1631-1669) translation of the Tableau de Cébès, a Greek philosopher of the late 5th century. The brother of the great satirist dedicated it to Michel de Marolles, abbé de Villeloin. At the end he inserted an essay of his own on melancholy (pp. 73-88). ''This little speech was made on the occasion of a definition of Melancholy given by a gallant man, which many people did not agree with. Thus I have to warn that one must consider this piece more as a paradox than as a truth.'' Ex-libris ms. of the academician Jean Ballesdens (1645-1675) and of the château de Valençay (Talleyrand).
