Description
CYRANO DE BERGERAC - Le Pédant joué. Comédie. Lyon, Christophe Fourmy, 1663. Pet. in-12, spine ribbed, gilt thread on covers, spine ribbed, decorated with gilt thread.
TCH II, 704. The first edition appeared in 1654. Granger, the hero of the comedy, is said to be a reminder of Cyrano's studious youth and to represent the principal of his college. He is in fact a mixture of pedantry and senile gallantry. Le Pédant joué is said to be the first of our comedies written in prose; it features an original character, Mathieu Gareau, who has often served as a model. A rough and ready peasant, a chatterbox who abounds in proverbs like Sancho, he is the first person in French theatre to express himself in patois (Fournel, Les contemporains de Molière, III, 379). Some similarities with the famous scene in the Galley from Les Fourberies de Scapin have led to the assumption that the play was written in collaboration with Molière.
