Description
FITELIEU, M. de, Sieur de Rodolphe & du Montour - La Contre-mode. Paris, Louis de Heuqueville, 1642. In-12, (8) ff, 406 pp, (1) f. ruled, some light spotting, paper a little yellowed, contemporary midnight blue morocco, triple gilt thread on covers, spine gilt, one corner slightly warped. BRUNET II, 1274. First edition.Paul Lacroix (Bulletin du Bibliophile 1860, p. 1581) already pointed out the rarity of this volume "very curious for the history of costume and manners in France". He contrasted it with Grenailles' La Mode (1642). He considered Grenailles to be "one of the best writers of our time". Here are the main chapters of Fitelieu's book: "La mode; teste à la mode; yeux à la mode; bouche à la mode; oreilles à la mode; mains à la mode; pieds à la mode; conversion à la mode; religion à la mode; dieux à la mode, les Dieux à la mode sont le Monde, les richesses, la Grandeur, l'Amour, l'Heur et l'Heure (which deals with superstitions and various means of predicting the future); corps à la mode; esprit à la mode." There would be to extract from this jumble of biblical and historical quotations a precious collection of documents on the fashions of the reign of Louis XIII. stamp on the title of the British writer William Brownsword Chorley (1804-1879). Ex-libris René de Batz.
