The Discours de réception de l'Académie française is published here for the first time with the Caractères (published separately in 1693); it is accompanied by an apologetic preface. Contains 1,120 characters, including 46 new ones (Claudin), three old ones are enlarged. Among the new characters: Cydias, Clitophon, Antagoras, Carro-Carri, etc. The new remarks are indicated here by a hand in the margin. This is the first complete edition of the Caractères, the ninth containing no new material. Figure of Henri Monod on the front board, bookplates of Mortimer Schiff and Colonel Sickles.
