BRUNET III, 990. GAY I, 99. LEVER 41. First edition in 1664. René Le Pays, sieur de Plessis-Villeneuve, a precious author par excellence, was born in Fougères in 1634. His admiration for Voiture, to whom his letters are closest, earned him a scathing epigram from Boileau: ''Le Pays sans mentir, est un bouffon plaisant ; Mais je ne trouve rien de beau dans ce Voiture'' (Satire III). This collection of 35 letters, which provides an excellent model of the preciosity of the last half of the century, was a great success (15 editions in ten years). Titon du Tillet tells us "that they earned the approval of the capital. There were ladies of the first rank who read them with great pleasure and who asked the bookseller how the author was made.''
