Description
MÉRÉ, Chevalier de - The Agremens. Speech to Madame ***. Paris, Denys Thierry & Claude Barbin, 1677. In-12, (2) f., 152 pp. in contemporary granulated brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated.
TCH IV, 687. First edition of the first of three speeches published under this title. The others appeared the same year, dealing with the Spirit and Conversation. The Chevalier de Méré was the teacher of decorum for a whole generation. Born in 1607, he became familiar with his favourite themes by frequenting the salons of the Hôtel de Rambouillet, Mme de Sablé and Mme de Longueville. He was a dear friend of Pascal. He reconciled with rare happiness the refinements of worldly life and high moral aspirations.
