For the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille, La Fayette, commander of the Parisian guard, proposed organising a national Fête de la Fédération on 14 July 1790 to celebrate the unity of the French. The Fête de la Fédération took place on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris, in the presence of King Louis XVI - who had sworn an oath to the Constitution - deputies and thousands of citizens from all over France. It was the only celebration of 14 July until the law of 6 July 1880 declared it a bank holiday.
