BERGIER, Nicolas - Histoire des grands chemins de l'empire romain contenant l'Origine, Progrès Etenduë quasi incroyable des Chemins Militaires, pavez depuis la Ville de Rome jusques aux extrémitez de son Empire. Où se voit la Grandeur la Puissance incomparable des Romains, ensemble l'éclaircissement de l'Itineraire d'Antonin de la Carte de Peutinger. Brussels, Jean Léonard, 1728. 2 vols. in-4, (23) ff, 909 (29) pp ; 2 portraits, frontispiece, one plate of medals and 11 folding plates including 8 maps forming the Peutinger map, contemporary marbled fawn, spine ribbed and ornamented, several epidermis. First published in 1622, this is the most important work by Nicolas Bergier (1567-1623) professor at the Faculty of Law in Reims, historiographer to the king and friend of Peiresc. Peiresc informed Bergier of the existence of the Peutinger Table and encouraged him in his work. The Peutinger Table (12th century), which indicated the main communication routes of the Roman Empire, was first published by Ortelius in 1598 and by Jansson in 1652.
