Description
DENIS, Jean Baptiste] - Mémoires anecdotes de la cour et du clergé de France, avec l'Histoire du différend du Cardinal de Noailles avec les Evêques de Luçon et de la Rochelle, et les Jésuites. London, 1712. In-12, front, (7) ff, 291 (5) pp, folding map (ecclesiastical map of the kingdom of France), 4 portraits h. t. of Clément XI, Bossuet, Mme de Maintenon, Jansénius, yellowed paper, contemporary gran. brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated. SHF 3104. Raised by a Catholic priest, then a Jesuit, Oratorian, in 1704 he was secretary to Bissy, Bossuet's successor in the bishopric of Meaux, who converted to Protestantism in 1706. The clergy of France was in absolute dependence on the court, its members had dissipated morals and squandered their possessions; disorder and confusion prevailed in this order. Denis attacks the government which, to the detriment of the nobility, is given to an "infinite number of creatures, even of the lowest extraction". He does not spare individuals, e.g. Mme de Maintenon, Noailles, Bissy and especially Bossuet: it is from him that we find the account of Bossuet's marriage to Mlle des Vieux de Mauléon, which Voltaire was quick to use and amplify.
