Description
FLAMSTEED, John - Flamsteed's Celestial Atlas, approved by the Royal Academy of Sciences... 2nd ed. by Mr J. Fortin, Engineer to the King & Royal Family, for Globes and Spheres. Paris, F. G. Deschamps, 1776. Pet. in-4, title, VIII pp. 30 maps on double page, 40 pp. half calf, spine smoothly decorated.
ROCHEDIEU 110. First French edition. First celestial atlas based on telescopic observation. The original edition was published posthumously in 1729 by Flamsteed's widow, in folio format. The work was an immediate success and remained the standard reference for professional astronomers for almost a century. This second edition was revised by Jean-Baptiste Fortin (1740-1817), a French geographer and cartographer, who reduced the format and made updates under the direction of the astronomers Le Monnier and Messier.
