Description
HANCARVILLE, P.-F. In-8, frontispiece, XII, 236 pp, 50 erotic plates in medallion, contemporary full calf, gilt garland on covers, spine ribbed and decorated. DUTEL A-727. First edition in 1780. The publication of this collection, like that of the Monumens du Culte secret des Dames romaines, is due to the antiquarian P.-F. Hugues, known as d'Hancarville, born in 1718 and died in 1805, who was, in archaeological matters, the collaborator of Sir William Hamilton, English ambassador to Naples. We suspect that P.-F.-Hugues d'Hancarville, of having presented as engravings reproducing antique cameos, plates whose subject he himself had conceived, but to tell the truth, whether or not he had authentic collectors' items as models, he did not imagine anything that the Ancients had not known. Front, (1) f., 16, 98 pp. 50 erotic plates. DUTEL A-734. First edition in 1780. Inversions between the two works probably in order to make two volumes of the same thickness.
