Description
KÜSEL, Melchior - Des fürtrefflichen Griechischen Helden und Ithacensischen Fürsten Ulysses Leben, Thaten und Zufälle, die ihme nach Eroberung des Asiatischen Königreichs und Statt Troja ... begegnet. Augsburg, Johann Ulrich Kraus, 1705. In-8, engraved title, (4) ff. 58 fig. engraved on copper by Melchior Küsel (1626-1683) and reproduced by his son-in-law Johann Ulrich Kraus (1655-1719), contemporary marbled fawn calf, spine with ornamented nerves. This suite is one of the few surviving examples of the frescoes executed by Le Primaticcio at the Château de Fontainebleau. The Galerie d'Ulysse, begun by the painter in 1540, was completed after his death in 1570, but destroyed in 1738. A Flemish artist, Theodor Van Thulden (1606-1669), an Antwerp pupil of Abraham Blyenburch and Rubens, had made copies which he engraved and which were published in Paris in 1643 and 1640, under the title La Gallerie du Chasteau Royal de Fontaine-Bleau, representant les Travaux d'Ulysse dessines par F. Primatice. Johann Ulrich Kraus's edition is a faithful copy, albeit in a reduced format.
