Description
LA PLACE, Pierre Antoine de] - Pièces intéressantes et peu connues, pour servir à l'Histoire. Brussels (Paris, Prault), 1781. In-12, VIII, 430 pp. in slightly post-pasted brown granulated calf, smooth spine ornamented, some epidermis. Volume I only of seven published up to 1790. SGARD 223. La Place (1707-1793), journalist who directed the Mercure (1760) and was at the origin of the first French daily newspaper: Le Journal de Paris, introduced in France the works of Shakespeare (Théâtre anglais, 1745-1749). The Pièces intéressants are a collection of ana, historical or literary anecdotes in which the author's sympathies shine through: Voltaire, whose pupil he claimed to be, Crébillon, Piron and Duclos are often called upon. They reflect La Place's Protestant origins and his hatred of Jesuit proselytism (he was brought up by force at the Collège de Saint-Omer). Contains Letters from J. B. Rousseau. Extract from the manuscripts of M. Colbert pp. 197-235. Letters from Cardinal Fleury, p. 236. Account of the conversion of Mlle Gauthier, actress, p. 267. Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire du Pape Clément XIV, p. 406. Bookplate of the Château de Valençais (Talleyrand).
