Description
Drawn and engraved on the original by the late Mr Matthieu Merian. A description of the town of Basle has been added & verses to each figure - Todten-Tanz, wie derselbe in der lobl. u. Pet. in-4, 190 pp, several russets, black half-chag. spine smoothly decorated. BRUNET III, 1650. bilingual French-German edition. Engraved title, 43 mid-page copper engravings by Anton Chovin after Matthäus Merian. The Basel Dance of Death was painted around 1440 on the inner wall of the cemetery of the former preachers' monastery in Basel, which was demolished in 1805. Merian's engravings, first published in Basel in 1621 and again in 1649, are a valuable record of the genesis and history of this sadly lost work of art.
