Description
ARGENS, Marquis d' - Memoirs. With some letters on various subjects. London (France ?), Aux Dépens de la Compagnie, 1735. In-12, (2) ff. 312 pp. in contemporary granulated brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated. Counterfeit of the ed. given by Conlon (III, 35250) in 296 pp. Memoirs written with the greatest truth which relate the youth of the writer. Later the Marquis d'Argens bitterly repented of having published them. Of all my works," he said, "the one I most regret having published is my Memoirs. And although they are written with the greatest truth, and have had some success, it is one of the greatest blunders I have made in my life to have composed such a book in my youth...". One of the most appreciated literary productions of the Marquis d'Argens, filled with comic adventures, bon mots and jokes, mingled with considerations on the fine arts and on love, all things that never failed to interest the epicurean to the highest degree.
