BECKFORD, William] - Vathek, an Arabian tale. Paris, Poinçot, 1787. In-8, 190 pp, without Poinçot's catalogue leaf, paper a little yellowed, a few russets, red half-marble with corners, smooth spine decorated, gilt head (Ch. LANOÉ).
First French edition acknowledged by Beckford. Vathek's original text written in French in 1782 is lost. In 1786 the Reverend Samuel Henley published an English translation which is the first known edition. In 1786, Jean David Levade translated it into French and published it in Lausanne, but it was disowned by Beckford. The following year it was published again by Poinçot and revised by François Verdeil, Louis Sébastien Mercier and Beckford himself.
