Description
CATHALAN, Jacques, s. j. - Funeral Oration of the Most High, Most Powerful and Most Excellent Princess Madame Elisabeth-Charlotte Palatine of Bavaria, Dowager Duchess of Orléans. Delivered in the Church of Laôn, 18 March 1723. Paris, Veuve Mazières, 1723. In-4, 64 pp, (2) ff (privilege), black half calf (HONNELAÎTRE). Charlotte-Elisabeth de Bavière (1652-1722), known as the Princess Palatine, second wife of the Duke of Orléans, brother of Louis XIV, and mother of the Regent, left a correspondence famous for the outspokenness and aptness with which she described the private life of Louis XIV and other Court figures. Coat of arms of the Princess Palatine engraved on the title. Portrait of the Princess at the head of the Oraison engraved by P. Drevet after Rigaud. Cul-de-lamp engraved by S. Thomassin after F. Lemoine. Curiously, this funeral oration was the only one composed under the circumstances in honour of the Princess. Its author, the Jesuit Father Jacques Cathalan, enjoyed a solid reputation in this field and his work, which possessed great qualities of style and thought, was praised by the journalists at Trévoux. We will have to wait for the posthumous publication of Massillon's works to find another eulogy of the Princess Palatine.
