JONES 3, GAY III, 135. First published in 1701, this novel is based on a true story: a woman is the victim of a violent and jealous husband who wants to get rid of her by selling her to a pirate. A veritable odyssey takes us through Genoa, a desert island, the Morea, Dulcigno, Malta and Rome. The pirate, a renegade from La Rochelle, falls in love with the Marquise de Fresne and is prepared to return to Christianity in order to marry her. Rome, despite its largesse, does not want to annul the first marriage. In addition to numerous adventures in which the Marquise even fires a shot, this novel contains a plea in favour of divorce (V. Turbet-Delof, Maghreb dans la littérature française, no. 277).
