Description
MANUSCRIT] - Hamilton, Anthony - Fragments de la vie du Comte de Gramont. S. l. n. d., c. 1712. 2 parts in 2 vols. in-4, 335, 444 pp. carefully calligraphed text. Chap. IX begins on page 27 of vol. II without separation from chap. VIII, as well as chap. XI, page 180, green morocco pl. from the epoch, wide gilt roul. on the boards, spine with ornamented nerves a little unstained, gilt tr., small repair on one board. One of the copies circulating in Versailles under this title, before the fraudulent publication in 1713 of Mémoires de la vie du comte de Grammont. The text faithfully follows the original. A third part, which never appeared, is announced at the end of volume II, as in all other editions. Hamilton, a French-speaking Irish writer, (Roscrea ? 1646 - Saint-Germain-en-Laye 1720) frequented the society of the Vendomes and shone at the small court of the Duchess of Maine. In his Memoirs, he recounts in a brilliantly witty style the adventures of his own brother-in-law, who was by turns a soldier, a gambler and a gallant at the French and English courts.
