Description
MANUSCRIT] - sterne, Laurence - Letters from Yorick to Elise, with The Story of Le Fêvre. Translated from the English by M. Sterne. Philadelphia, 1784. In-8, (3) ff, 95 pp ; 4 (5) pp, 58 pp (Histoire de Le Fêvre), green morocco, gilt thread on boards, smooth spine slightly faded, gilt tr. Copy of an edition that did exist at the Philadelphia address in 1784, in-8 format, comprising 106 and 70 pp. It is unknown to Rochedieu and seems very rare. The Letters from Yorick to Eliza first appeared posthumously in London in 1773. They were written by Sterne to her friend Elisabeth Draper at the beginning of 1767, shortly before she left England to join her husband in India. (Bound at the end:) Éloge historique de Robert de France, comte d'Artois, frère du roi S. Louis, chef da la première branche royale de France-Artois. S. l., 1785. 1 f., 76 pp. Copy of an anonymous edition, also dated 1785 -- (Recueil de huit romances) with music notated each time with the refrain, followed by the verses on two columns. 7 pp. written in violet ink. Of these, three are designated as being by J.-J. Rousseau. The first begins with ''Que le jour me dure! Far from you, all nature is nothing to me. The greenest bocage, when you don't come, is nothing but a wild place.'' It was published in Les Consolations des misères de ma vie, ou recueil d'airs, romances et duos (Paris, 1781).
