Description
MERCIER, Louis-Sébastien - The Savage Man. History translated from .... Paris, Vve Duchesne, 1767. In-12, 310 pp. Bayle on the false-title, contemporary marbled fawn calf, smooth spine decorated. HARTIG and SOBOUL 59. First edition. It follows fairly closely the text by J. G. Pfeil (1732-1800), his German inspiration, author of Der Wild published in the collection Versuch in moralischen Erzählungen (1757). Under the fiction of a travel report by an Englishman recounting the story of an Indian, the misdeeds of the Spanish in Peru and the perfidy of the Europeans are evoked. This novel, whose theme is the incestuous and unhappy love of a brother and sister made impossible by the demands of civilised society, has been seen as a source of Chateaubriand's René. This apology for the state of nature, praising savages whether anthropophagous or practising incest, was banned as soon as it was published.
