Description
ALAMANNI (Luigi). *Gyrone il cortese*. Paris, Rinaldo Calderio [Regnault Chaudière], 1548. In-4, brown sheepskin, decorated ribbed spine, red edges (original binding). 8 unnumbered folios, 180 numbered folios.
‘A fine edition, printed under the author’s supervision; an advantage not enjoyed by the Venetian edition’, says Brunet I, 126. Text in italics over two columns.
Spectacular title page bearing the bookseller’s mark within an engraved frame and a fine initial on a dotted background at the head of the colophon.
“The work, a rewriting of the prose novel *Gyron le courtois* (printed c. 1503), was commissioned by François I from his Italian poet, serving as a tool for French political propaganda in Italy. The original novel, composed around 1235–1240, the second part of *Meliadus de Leonoys*, belongs to the Arthurian cycle and serves as a prologue to *Lancelot*; it saw five partial editions between 1501 and 1534”, according to the Barbier-Mueller Collection. The printer and bookseller, Claude Chaudière, practised in Paris between 1546 and 1564, taking over, together with his father Regnault, the business of Simon de Colines, whose son-in-law he was.
From the library of Rosa Morando, a patrician of Verona, with an 18th-century armorial bookplate.
