MAUGIN (Jean). The Story of Palmerin d’Olive, son of King Florendos of Macedonia, and of the fair Griane, daughter of Remicius, Emperor of Constantinople (...). Paris, Estienne Groulleau, 1553. Folio, green glazed sheepskin with beige decoration of roots and foliage, framed with gilt fillets, decorated spine, gilt edges, preserved in a modern canvas slipcase (Rivière). 8 unnumbered folios, 275 numbered folios. The first edition of Jean Maugin’s translation of *Palmerin d’Olive* was published in 1546 in Paris by Jean Longis in an 8vo format. It is the first French translation of the famous chivalric novel. Jean Maugin, a poet and translator who called himself ‘l’Angevin’ or ‘le Petit Angevin’, was undoubtedly a native of Angers. Nothing is known for certain about his life, save that he was industrious. We owe him numerous translations. Maugin occupies a special place amongst those who, in the 16th century, rewrote medieval novels.
