Description
PELEUS (Julien PELIEU, known as). *Le Chevalier françois*. No place, 1606. In-16, brown morocco, fleurons on the spine, gilt edges (modern binding). 368 pp., 2 blank folios.  First edition (?) of this very rare chivalric novel attributed to Julien Peleus (born in Angers around the mid-16th century), Councillor of State and historiographer to Henry IV. The title page features a large woodcut in a folk style.  Cioranescu gives an edition from the same date, also without a place of publication, comprising 225 pages, adding: attributed rather to the Duke of Bellegarde. Not listed in Lever. ‘A singular blend of violence, historical references (Bayard, du Vain, Ivry …), praise for tolerance and Calvinism, and precise political views: Spain wishes to drive a wedge between us and England (...) yet with the alliance of the Swiss, Florence and Geneva, the cannons of the Arsenal and Rosny’s finances, the king is invincible.
