Description
[ANONYMOUS]. Venda, Queen of Poland, or The Charming and Curious Account of the Most Memorable Events of That Time. The Hague, Abraham Troyel, 1705. 12mo, blue morocco, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine with panels decorated with flowers and sprigs, gilt interior lace, gilt edges (Hardy). 6 ff., 155 pp. (woodcut vignette at the top of the text).
First edition of this short novel inspired by the legendary Polish sovereign, Princess Wanda, a paragon of patriotism and heroism, regarded somewhat as a Polish Joan of Arc due to her courage and resistance to the invader. The work is dedicated to the Duchess of Radzivil, née Princess of Anhalt, by the author, who signs as A. T. Jones on p. 10, Gay I, 1300.
The novel was reprinted several times up until 1748.
