Description
[AUBIGNAC (François HÉDELIN, Abbé of)]. *Le Roman des Lettres*, dedicated to Her Royal Highness Mademoiselle. Paris, J. Baptiste Loyson, 1667. In-8, blue morocco, gilt fillet binding, ribbed spine with gilt arabesque decoration, gilt interior edging, gilt edges (Capé). Title page, 5 folios, 592 pages. First edition.  The lengthy dedication, signed ‘Ariste’, places the book under the patronage of the great Mademoiselle, whose coat of arms is wood-engraved on the title page. The heroes of this epistolary novel are named Ariste, Peralte, Cleoriman, Oriale... The grandson of Ambroise Paré, François Hédelin d’Aubignac (1604–1676) is best known as a theatre theorist, playwright and novelist. A fine copy, with wide margins, in a beautiful Capé binding.
