BARCLAY (John). *L'Argenis*. – The Sequel and Continuation of *L'Argenis* by Mr Mouchernberg. Paris, Nicolas Buon, 1623–1626. 2 large in-8 volumes, speckled brown calfskin, gilt coat of arms on the covers, spines covered with gilt decoration, red edges (18th-century binding). 8 ff., 1082 pp., 2 ff. (errata and privilege). – The Sequel: 6 unnumbered folios, 578 pp., 652 pp. First edition of the first French translation, by Pierre de Marcassus, of this famous political and allegorical roman à clef, published in England in 1621.  Illustrated title page engraved with a portrait of Louis XIII on the reverse by Gaultier, 24 full-page illustrations by L. Gaultier and Mellan, and a portrait of the author after Du Monstier.   The ‘Suite due à M. de Mouchemberg’ forms the second and third parts of *L’Argenis*. It is illustrated with a frontispiece engraved by Crispin de Passe the Younger and 13 full-page engravings by Léonard Gaultier and Crispin de Passe the Younger. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Alexandre, Duke of La Rochefoucauld and La Roche-Guyon. From the Roger Paultre library (1993, no. 17), with bookplate.
