Description
BOECE DE BOLSWERT. – [MORIN (M.)]. The Pilgrimage of Two Sisters, Colombelle and Volontairette, to Their Beloved in the City of Jerusalem. Published in Liège and sold in Lille by Jacquez, undated (c. 1685). In-8, beige half-calf, with red and green title pieces, red edges (19th-century binding). Illustrated engraved title page, IV pp., 272 pp., 4 ff. of tables.
One of the many editions of this mystical novel, which was first published in Antwerp in 1636. It is illustrated with a frontispiece and 26 plates.
‘The translation has been revised once again and the illustrations have also been redrawn’ Brunet I, 1079. Lever, p. 341, does not cite this edition.
The two sisters in the novel, who represent vice and virtue in the flesh, are said to have inspired the Marquis de Sade’s story of Juliette and Justine.
