[BRÉMOND (Sébastien)]. *Le Pèlerin*. Short story. Published by George L’Indulgent in St James of Galicia [Amsterdam, Wolfgang], c. 1670–1680. In-12, red morocco, ribbed spine decorated with ornate panels and gilt title, covers framed with gilt fillets and dotted lines, fleurons at the corners and coats of arms in the centres, lined with purple morocco framed by gilt garlands, gilt edges (Amand). 16 unnumbered folios, including frontispiece and title page featuring the Sphere, 179 pp. First edition of this libertine novel dedicated to Prince G. A. of Mecklenburg, published clandestinely around 1670 according to Rahir or 1683 according to Gay. “The Academy of Libertines, of which he was a member, having incurred the wrath of the Church, a young man fled Rome and went to Spain disguised as a pilgrim…” reads the promising introduction by A. Sauvy and M. Ninomiya. The opening lines of the novel explain the title: “Ever since the spirit of devotion has taken hold of the knights-errant, one sees almost nothing else in the world.” A copy bearing the coat of arms of Joseph Guilhem de Lagondie, with an ex-libris (1879, no. 555).
