In-8, marbled brown calfskin, gilt coat of arms on the covers, decorated spine, gilt edges (early 18th-century binding). 12 ff., 427 pp., 2 pp. (privilegium). First edition. ‘Presenting his works as an antidote to the heroic and legendary adventures that corrupt the youth, Jean-Pierre Camus brought the devotional novel into vogue, whilst also being one of the pioneers of the realist novel. *Élise, ou l’innocence coupable* seems a perfect prototype of this new genre, both in terms of the narrative structure and the baroque language, as well as the moral lessons that punctuate the text. ‘By probing the human heart, the author produces an excellent study of the mores of his time…’ says Marie-France Rocoffort. A bound copy bearing the coat of arms of Louis-Urbain Le Fèvre de Caumartin (1653–1720). It also bears the bookplate of Cardinal J. F. P. Le Fèvre de Caumartin, Bishop of Vannes (1668–1733).
