Description
CHAVIGNY de LA BRETONNIÈRE (François de). *La Galante Hermaphrodite*. A romantic short story by Monsieur de Chavigny. Amsterdam: published by Jean Chambord, 1683. Small 12mo, modern plain cardboard binding, marbled paper. 4 folios, 100 pages. First edition (?) of this novella dedicated to Count François de St. Pol, whom he hoped would become his ‘patron’. François de Chavigny (1652–1705), a former Benedictine monk, fled to Amsterdam where he published libertine works, pamphlets and articles in underground newspapers. He was frequently convicted. The religious police managed to capture him in Amsterdam and imprisoned him at Mont Saint-Michel, where he died insane in 1705. This little book appears to be very rare and is not held by the National Library. Cioranescu 19050 cites, from the same date, an Amsterdam edition of 117 pages – Lever p. 171 – Gay II, 370.
