Description
COTIGNON (Pierre). *Le Phylaxandre* … dedicated to Their Lordships the Dukes of Rethelois and Mayenne. Paris, Jacques Villery, 1625. In-12, fawn calfskin, bound with a triple blind-stamped border, gilded coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, speckled edges (original binding). Engraved title-page and frontispiece, 4 leaves (printed title, dedication and privilege), 647 pp. A very rare first edition of this novel in prose and verse. Pierre Cotignon (1582–1641) was a prominent figure from the Nièvre region. A friend of Colletet and Marolles, he was a member of the illustrious Bergers. ‘His works are hard to come by,’ says Gueneau.  The binding bears the coat of arms of Paule-Marguerite de Gondi (?) on the spine and that of Jacques-Auguste de Thou on the covers, stamped at a later date by one of his sons, as J.-A. de Thou died in 1617.
