Description
[DUCLOS (Charles)]. The Confessions of the Count of ***: A Romance. Lyon, 1773. 2 parts in one in-12 volume, speckled fawn sheepskin, gilt coat of arms on the covers, plain gilt spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). A new edition of this memoir-novel, which was first published in 1742 and was frequently reprinted. The work enjoyed great success for a long time.
In a letter to D’Alembert dated 1762, Voltaire wrote: ‘This is not a work destined to go down to posterity. It is merely a chronicle of good fortune, a novel without a plot (...) However, I can well imagine that the naturalness and liveliness of the style, and above all the substance of the subject, must have delighted young and old alike’.
A fine copy bearing the coat of arms of Jérôme-Louis Parat, Baron de Chalandray, Receiver-General of Finances for Lorraine and Barrois in 1749, who died at his château in La Celle near Saint-Cloud in 1793. Olivier, plate 534.
