HELIODORUS – [MONTLYARD (Jean de)]. The Loves of Theagenes and Chariclea. An Ethiopian Tale by Heliodorus. New translation. Second edition. Paris, Samuel Thiboust, 1626. A substantial in-8 volume, in green long-grained morocco, framed with gilt fillets and a floral garland, with embossed arabesques; spine with gilt fillets and fleurons; gilt interior lace; gilt edges (Courteval). 10 leaves (title page and table of contents), 806 pages, 9 leaves (table of contents). An edition adorned with an engraved illustrated title page and 52 full-page engravings signed by Isaac Briot (1585–1670), Michel Lasne (after 1590–1667), Crispin de Passe (1549–1670) and Jean Matheus (who worked in Paris around 1620), or unsigned. A masterpiece of Baroque illustration, this fine edition was published by Triboust in 1622, 1623 and 1626. Despite the indication on the title page, no first edition is known to exist. Unless the phrase ‘second edition’ is intended to distinguish this version from that of Amyot, revised by Vital d’Audiguier in 1609. The attribution of this translation to Montlyard has been disputed. A very fine copy, sumptuously bound by Courteval, a craftsman who practised in Paris from 1796 to 1836.
